Very happy to announce I’ve been working on a brand new set of idents for BBC 2 – the first batch of which are out tomorrow (27th September). As both composer and sound designer on the project based at my London studio, my aim was to build unique soundscapes for each film that blurred the line between what could be “music” or “sound”… performing musical instruments in unusual ways and re-working recorded foley and sound effects into more “musical” forms. Most sounds are re-pitched, modulated, delayed and enhanced using a combination of vintage analogue studio equipment and digital techniques in the computer.
Working with BBC Creative and Superunion who oversaw the project, is has been a dream to collaborate with artists and animation studios including Aardman, The Mill, Kijek & Adamski (Strange Beasts), FutureDeluxe, Conlan Normington, David McLeod, Ari Weinkle, Helmut Breineder, Kenneth Robin and Mainframe.
I’m very excited that Nureyev, the film I’ve been working on over the last few years with brilliant BAFTA nominated director Jacqui Morris, is having its theatrical release on Tuesday 25th September. Distributed by Universal, the score was recorded in Abbey Road Studio 1 by the London Metropolitan Orchestra, along with a 9 piece choir.

Half-documentary, half-ballet (collaborating with choreographer Russell Maliphant) this has been a really special project to have been a part of and I’m really excited to share (the recording sessions took place over a year ago!). To find showings or book tickets, visit the film’s website here.
I’ve also uploaded three pieces from the film on my album page on this site, here.
Really happy to have arranged strings for Jungle’s new album “For Ever”, on the album produced by the brilliant INFLO. I absolutely love what they do and it was a dream to collaborate with the band.. we recorded an eight-piece string section at Metropolis Studios earlier in the year.
Tracks on the album are Home, Beat 54 (All Good Now), House In LA, Give Over & (More and More) It Ain’t Easy.. buy the limited edition yellow vinyl from XL Recordings here!
Very honoured to have been asked to speak at this year’s Tune Up event, which this year is happening on Friday 23rd November 2018 at the BFI Southbank. I’ve often come to these as a punter so I’m really excited to share examples of my work and talk a little about the industry.
For more information and to book tickets, go to the Tune Up website here.
I’ve been working again with the lovely folks at BBC Creative on the launch trailer for BBC 1’s flagship Strictly Come Dancing programme, directed by the brilliant Sam Brown of Rogue Films.
The track that ended up on air was a piano arrangement of the song Two Can Have a Party by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (before the original kicks in). However, a second all-original track was written which didn’t make the cut but ended up on the “Making Of” video.. so keep your ears peeled for that.
I’ve been collaborating again with Olivier winning director Lyndsey Turner, along with designer Es Devlin, sound designer Chris Shutt and lighting designer Paule Constable on Aristocrats written by Brian Friel.
Opening for previews at the Donmar Theatre in London’s West End on 2nd August, the production runs until 22nd September.
For more information, visit the Donmar’s web page here.
Fresh from working on the theme for the BBC’s 2018 World Cup coverage, I’ve been collaborating again with BBC Creative this time for the upcoming European Championships due to be broadcast on the BBC this August.
I’ve written music both for the promo film below and the opening titles sequence…
The BBC have released the full 5 min version of “Ochi Chernye”, the Russian folk song that I arranged and recorded with Sir John Tomlinson, performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra and recorded at Abbey Road Studio 1. The BBC have used the song extensively for their World Cup 2018 coverage, and has also been remixed by DJ Sigala for the opening title sequence.. It has also been played on BBC Radio 3 and available on iPlayer here.
For listeners outside the UK I’ve also put up a link on my Soundcloud below.
A rough translation of the lyrics….
Dark eyes, burning eyes Passionate and splendid eyes How I love you, How I fear you Truly, I saw you at not a good hour
Dark eyes, flaming eyes They implore me into faraway lands Where love reigns, where peace reigns Where there is no suffering, where war is forbidden
I’d love for there to be a download of the track to be made available, so watch this space….
Conducted by by Andy Brown, Engineered and mixed by Andrew Dudman.
